Questions--How to get maximum depth from XLT?

The XLT is a great detector, but I know I'm not using it to its best advantage. Does anyone have suggestions about how to get the very deepest readings? I understand that turning up the pre-amp gain and the AC Sensitivity can help, but, does anyone know certain combinations of this that seem to work better than others? Are there other settings I can adjust that might make a difference? How about using the 12 inch Hot Shot coil? Anyone have any experience with that? I'm willing to try just about anything to get a couple of inches more depth.

Accept down to minus 30 and use mixed mode. It takes some getting used to the sound but iron is easily identified and you will gain a few inches. Also air balance about 6" above ground. I think that gets more depth also.

I struggled with trying to get deeper with my xlt for over a year. I spent allot ($) on coils and spent allot of time with 100s of adjustments and programs.
finally I went with the factory pre sets and just enjoyed the hobby. I would get 10" in slightly wet soil accurately. But when you get past 5 or 6 inches down it seems to me to lie allot.
I use a 1980s eagle 2 sl now.

Thanks for the responses. I'll keep trying. Here in Oregon, I seem to be able on occasion to get down to 6 inches, but my buddies keep telling me the silver is at 7 or more.
