Had to give my Classic 4 a spanking today
So I'm at my local soccer field, getting my clad fix before the rains move in, and my Classic 4 starts to chatter. I twisted knobs and flipped triggers and she still won't pick up any signals even in all metal. Just a continuous noisy chattering It's done this before and replacing the batteries with fresh ones cured it. Problem is these batteries are less than ten hours old. So I yank the battery pack anyway. fiddle with it wait a bit, put it back, same chatter. Take the pack out again, remove all the batteries to verify they are all good( I keep a voltmeter in the car). Upon installation my detector clicks on and tones out perfectly on a convenient curbside nickel then promptly goes back into that chattering fit. I'm just a little more than peeved at this point and respond with a slap to her hind quarters. BINGO! that was just the ticket. hunted for 2 more hours without a lick of trouble.
Any Ideas on what causes this and how to fix it without treating my machine like a spoiled brat?
Thanks,
Zach

The pat on the hind.....then the spoiled brat behaving sounds like a short to me. I'd send her to the Whites Dr. for a checkup just in case.
...Wait a minute....just slow down.... you're gonna miss this....you're gonna want this back.....

Batteries not making good contact....
It's a common thing in those detectors.

Thanks guys,
I'm somewhat adept when it comes to electronics and since the warranty is up I'll give the internals a good cleaning and check my connections before i send it off to get worked on.
One more thing: I have a hunting spot that's just super trashy but i know has been in use since the early 1800s. Will a smaller coil be compatible with my machine, like the Blue Max 4X6 or the 5.3 bullseye? Upgrading to a new machine is a little farther off than i would like right now but I would love to pick through the trash at this site and get to the goodies.
Thanks
Zach

Get the 5x3 Bullseye. It won't get much less depth, and it will cherry pick a little better

Your battery pack had two areas where they make contact with two sharp contacts. Make sure these are clean. Then reach into the detector and pull on the contacts a little bit. This will make the connection better when you slip the battery case in. Also don't just drop the battery pack in. Slide it in gently so you don't bent the contacts.

The coils that work on the Classics (II, III, III SL, CLASSIC ID, IDX PRO) will not work on the Classic 4. The original classics are 6.59 kHz. The Classic 4 is 8.0 kHz.
