    New mxt user questions

I'm relatively new at metal detecting and i have a mxt 300. With the MXT set on coins and rings won't pickup a gold ring right on top of the ground. Another thing I find madding is that Canadian coins apparently have a lot of tin in them so I seldom get a sound out he machine with dimes and quarters. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try backing down your gain control. Also check that your threshold isn't turn down too low. You just want to barely hear a slight sound. Your gain control might be set too high and it's rejecting your target. Hope this helps you.

The only way that is possible is if you have a defective machine or coil, or, you have the gain knob up to high. It doesn't take a whole lot to block out gold. Turn your gain all the way down, check it, no signal, you have an equipment problem. If you do get a signal, turn the gain up a little and repeat, keep doing that until you get no signal. Then you will have an idea where the setting is you start losing gold. Keep in mind a small gold chain can read as foil and a mans wedding band can read as 35-40. Canadian coins are even cheesier than US coins so I think you have your disc too high. Also, are you ground balancing?

double check discrimantion knob full counterclockwise. check a quarter. make sure battery check is ok. If quarter has no depth in an air test probaly bad coil. i had one go back to dealer and have hime xchange it. One last thing make sure it is a (gold) ring not pot metal.

GW is right. Too much discrimination can definitely reject gold which can be found almost anywhere on the scale including iron. You should be able to find most gold jewelry if you set your disc.a bit lower than a nickel. There's gold that can be found below that setting so you have to decide how much junk you want to hear. Gold chains are particularly easy to disc. out.

I'm speaking from ignorance on the MXT as I know nothing about that detector other than guys who have them proclaim them to be fine machines (they're Whites afterall) but those are basic detector truisms for any machine.
