XLT Adjustments

After having used Garret detectors for years, I took the plunge and recently bought an XLT and have been coin hunting here in eastern NC. I have used the basic preset program for coins and jewelry. In hunting an older housing area, all of my finds have been recent and older clad along with some wheat cents and costume jewelry. All finds have been recovered at a depth of less than 6 inches. With the age of the housing area, I should be pulling up silver; so far not one thin dime! Now, either someone has hunted this area some time ago and recovered the silver or earlier residents just did not lose any, which I seriously doubt. Anyway, my question is this: what recommendations would you suggest in so far as making adjustments to the basic program that would increase depth. I am using the 950 series coil and really want to learn more about how to use this machine. Thanx!

Seajay, These are my suggestions for a good XLT program.

AC Sens - 70-75

DC Sens set it to be able to hear deep targets but you'll probably be able to hear them at a setting of 20. By lowering that you'll be able to pinpoint shallow targets easier.

Tone ID - On

VCO - On

Modulation - Off

Discrimination- Reject -95 to -31, Accept -30 to +94, accept +95 if you're not bothered with hotrocks

Transmit Boost- On

Preamp Gain - 4

If your detector runs too unstable then decrease the AC Sens before decreasing the Preamp Gain. If you're down to an AC Sens of 65 & still are running unstable then lower the PAG to 3 & try increasing your AC Sens by a few numbers.

This has worked well for me since I got my XLT in '96 & use the same basic program with my DFX except for the features the DFX has that the XLT doesn't - like variable filters & sweep speed, etc.

I make similar adjustments and use the same basic guidelines, my question to you is; before you make the adjustments you listed above, are you in a stock program? If so which one?

It doesn't make much difference, Ice. Make all the changes you want in a stock program & then either Save it in a custom slot following the instruction in your owner's guide or the next time you use the detector without replacing the battery merely squeeze the trigger after start up to get you back to the same settings you had before turning your detector off.

I'm going back to my original post to make a correction although it really doesn't matter a whole lot. I typed "Accept -40 to +94". You'll see be the reject numbers I gave I meant to say"Accept -30......

Actually on my DFX I accept down to -80. -30 or -40 or even more will get you good depth if you can stand the noise. Of course if there's little ferrous components in the ground or little iron trash it doesn't matter.

If the detector appears unstable or if it's just too noisy, lots of false signals ,you can go more conservative on the AC Sens, & work your way up to it when you learn what the detector is telling you.
