Description of Website: The Lewis Henry Morgan Chapter was organized in 1916 and is the oldest Chapter in the Association. The Chapter is named after Mr. Lewis Henry Morgan, a former Rochester resident, who established the "Indian Department " at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY in 1849. Mr. Morgan is known as one of the founders of the science of Anthropology. Although his research and books did touch upon archeology, they were primarily ethnological in approach and content. The goals of the Chapter are: " to promote archeological and historical research concerning the artifacts, rites, customs, beliefs and other phases of the lives and culture of the occupants of New York State; to preserve mounds, ruins and other evidence of those peoples and to cooperate with the NYSAA and with other associations in affecting a wider knowledge of archeology and to help secure legislation for anthropological, archeological or historical ends; to maintain sympathetic appreciation of the history of the American Indian, particurly of those Indians aboriginal to what is now New York State; to promote the use of accepted methods of archeological research; and to publish papers covering the results of field work of members or other matters within the purview of the Chapter" Activities of the Chapter include an annual banquet, picnic and field day, and regular monthly meeting. Meetings consist slide lectures , films, discussions and displays which usually focus upon local prehistoric and historic archeology, ethnology and history. The Chapter publishes a journal , THE IROQUOIAN which contains articles written members and others, and deals with local subjects and interests. Members receive THE IROQUOIAN, as well as the THE BULLETIN which contains numerous articles about New York state archeology. By joining the Morgan Chapter one automatically becomes a member of the NYSAA.
