Ornament dated back to the Dark Ages! Pure gold (24K) w/red stone |
| Description |
Visiting England with a group of detectorists, James Blackburn was intently scanning an area near a Roman settlement in East Anglia. While he knew the next signal might bring to light an early coin or artifact, it's doubtful that he expected anything quite as dramatic as the gleaming gold pendant that he pinpointed just 15 minutes into the hunt. He was even more surprised when a British expert accompanying the tour told him that the ornament dated back to the Dark Ages! Pure gold (24K) and set with a 1/2 x 3/4" red stone (possibly a garnet), the 5th-6th century Saxon pendant has been declared treasure trove under English law and is now at a museum, awaiting further study, appraisal, and disposition. "I've been to England several times and made many good finds there," says James," but this is the most exciting and rarest of all!"
