Early morning mist mantled the mesquite as Thomas Covington headed toward a site so steeped in early Texas history that he knew he and his detector would not be disappointed. Pausing at a nearby pond, he glanced at the water's surface, and something caught his eye. Running his searchcoil over the spot, he got a blip, stepped into the shallows, and closed his hand around the small target. Beyond belief, it was a Republic of Texas Marine Corps button, fabulously rare and in perfect condition! Suddenly the silence of the surrounding hills was shattered by a resounding Rebel yell! After spending the rest of the day studying and photographing the area, Thomas headed back to thank the landowners. On the way, he got a signal near a clump of cactus... another T.M.C. button! The buttons have since been acquired by a leading collector, ensuring that they will be displayed and appreciated in a manner befitting their historical importance. To other searchers, Thomas offers these words: "Permission is a must in any hunting situation. Fill your holes. Never leave a site bare. Listen to the wind, bless the sun on your back, and thank the old ones who went before and left you their treasures."
