Four big Spanish "dollars" (8 reales), all in a stack and 10" deep |
| Description |
The historic Maine home owned by Douglas and Carol Doorenbos had been built in 1867, but long before that another residence had occupied the same site. So, as Michael J. Fiori set up his detector for the search, he had hopes of coaxing up a few old silver coins- but pieces of eight? Nevertheless, there they were... four big Spanish "dollars" (8 reales), all in a stack and 10" deep... and another 2" deeper! The oldest was dated 1773; the "newest," 1809. Spanish silver was the standard of trade in Colonial days, and legal tender in the U.S. until 1857, but Michael had to wonder what long-ago scenario brought these coins to his small community. We think you'll agree that it makes for some fascinating speculation.
