Over the years, he's found older coins... Colonial coppers, Spanish silver, British gold. Rarer ones, too. Matter of fact, you've probably read about some of them right here in W&ET. But seldom has Michael O. Smith dug a large cent as lovely as this 1798 Draped Bust, with its deep emerald-green surfaces and sharply-struck details. He'll also tell you that when he found it, it was so heavily encrusted with dirt that he figured he had nothing to lose by soaking it overnight in a household cleaning solution- as he says, "a very brave but foolish thing to do!" Fortunately, in this instance everything turned out all right. The next day, when he began gently removing the softened coating, what emerged was a coin so beautiful that he knew right away what his Best Finds entry would be. No wonder he smiles when he says, "I call it my good luck penny!"
