It wasn't the first time Richard E. Clem had hunted the old Maryland house site. He and his brother Don had been there before, finding Indian Heads and large cents from the early 1800s. But there was something different about this September afternoon. Along a limestone outcropping, in less than an hour Richard uncovered a silver 3¢ piece and a 1774 British copper- and then a 1789 Washington Inaugural button! One of the "Eagle with Star of Eight Points" varieties (Albert #WI 13-C), it is considered quite scarce. Traces of gilt highlight the design, and despite a ding or two it has plenty of eye appeal. Yet for Richard the real issue isn't condition or collectability. In his words, "It's a piece of American history."
