When Gary Edgecomb retired from the Army in 1995 and returned to his native state in the Northeast, he was seeking a focus for his newfound leisure and freedom. With a background blending military service and historical environs, it's easy to understand why he settled on Revolutionary War relic hunting, and soon the "History Room" of his home became a showcase for militaria of centuries past. Early last year, information led him to the site where he located this superbly preserved Scottish regiment sword belt tip and, some time afterward, the accompanying slide or "keeper" as well. A previously unreported pattern, distinctly different from those used by other regiments of the period, it dates c. 1779-83. Based on the site's history of occupation, and associated recoveries, the artifact can be confidently attributed to the 74th Regiment. Gary isn't ready to disclose the location yet, but says he learned of it through a British soldier's diary. There now, didn't we tell you research is important? And as Gary must have said when he pulled up this impressive piece "That's a heck of a tip!"
