| Description |
Finding the lock was easy enough. Finding out more about it took a little extra "digging," but Elton Cox didn't stop until he'd solved the mystery of its elaborate monogram. The intertwined letters PW&B represent the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad, a line organized in 1836 and linking its namesake cities two years later. In 1902, it merged with another line to become the Philadelphia, Baltimore & Washington. The lock's age is less certain, but it's believed to date from the late 1800s. A collectors' guide lists it at $999+, and a recent auction price of $1,300 has been reported, but Elton's low-key about the lock's value: "I'm not so much interested in that as I am in its history." We'd say his priorities, like the ol' PW&B Railroad, are right on track! |
