Title PW&B RAILROAD LOCK
Image
Found in 1999
Found By Elton Cox
Value 1300
Category Relic
Heading From the late 1800s
Description Finding the lock was easy enough. Finding out more about it took a little extra "digging," but Elton Cox didn't stop until he'd solved the mystery of its elaborate monogram. The intertwined letters PW&B represent the Philadelphia, Wilmington & Baltimore Railroad, a line organized in 1836 and linking its namesake cities two years later. In 1902, it merged with another line to become the Philadelphia, Baltimore & Washington. The lock's age is less certain, but it's believed to date from the late 1800s. A collectors' guide lists it at $999+, and a recent auction price of $1,300 has been reported, but Elton's low-key about the lock's value: "I'm not so much interested in that as I am in its history." We'd say his priorities, like the ol' PW&B Railroad, are right on track!
