As a nuclear power plant inspector, John MacIver does a lot of traveling. Not long ago, his duties took him to Wiscasset, Maine. Enjoying a little local exploring in his spare time, he decided to try his detector at a spot near an old railroad trestle. At first the search seemed unpromising, but then he found an old baggage claim check (tag) from the Wiscasset & Quebec Railroad, a small, narrow-gauge line of the 1890s. Soon he found two more, and then five in a stack. The final tally was 23. Researching in reverse, he visited a nearby museum, where he learned that the checks were not only historically important but potentially quite valuable. Railroad memorabilia experts contacted by W&ET priced them at $80-120 apiece.
