Green steatite "elbow pipe," c. 900 A.D. |
| Description |
When a newly bulldozed lot in Charleston, South Carolina beckoned Matthew Ganshow and his detector, he probably didn't envision anything as ancient as the amazing artifact awaiting him there. There atop the freshly turned earth was a carved stone pipe more than a thousand years old! Officials at a nearby museum identified it as a green steatite "elbow pipe," c. 900 A.D. Intricately incised on all sides, the pipe bears an effigy figure (sometimes referred to as the "long-nosed god") associated with the early Mississippian cultural period, and numerous tally marks around the bowl. The museum has invited Matthew to put the pipe on display so that archaeologists can study it, and visitors can marvel at it, too. When they do, we hope they'll also ponder the fact that our hobby helped to place it there. |
