| Description |
For exonumists, the discovery that Dick Eckles made at a military campsite along the Oregon Trail is undoubtedly the "Best Find of 1996"- a stamped, uniface brass 5¢ token issued sometime in the mid 1800s by Fort Kearney sutler J.W. Hugus. The fort was established on the trail in 1848 for the protection of settlers and travelers. Nebraska tokens authority George Hosek has described Dick's find as "one of the most sought-after military tokens in the U.S." |
