It all began at the library, where Jack Dryja found the clues he needed to pinpoint what has become prime detecting territory for him. Indians... French trappers and traders... British troops... Americans. At one time or another, they've all been there, and Jack has been following their tracks since 1993. Last spring, he and his friend Dan Kalata were hunting there again, and suddenly Jack shouted a triumphant, "Yeah!" as he held aloft a cross-belt plate of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, a Canadian provincial corps, from the War of 1812! Surrounded by the name of the regiment is the script cypher GR for Georgius Rex, or "King George" (George III of Great Britain). A heavy patina and light pitting attest to the plate's age underground, yet all the details are still discernible, and the attachment devices are intact on the back. "To this day, I wonder how it ended up where it did," says Jack. "I guess someone just left it for me to find!" |
