| Description |
General Sherman didn't have much luck at Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi in 1862, but in 1997 Dan Patterson did. Early last year, he found a Confederate artillery worm, or cannon cleaner, there. Originally attached to a long wooden handle, the large iron corkscrew-like device was used to extract rags, cartridge bag material, etc. from the bore of the big gun. Dan says they're hard to come by in the field, and in fact he knows of only two others recovered in the region. Not only that, but he's the first Best Finds winner ever honored for digging up a worm!
