| Description |
Every signal is exciting... every good find is satisfying... but now and then there's one that leaves its lucky discoverer absolutely stunned! That's what happened to David A. Whittington last spring, at a vacant lot in old Augusta, Georgia, when he heard in his headphones the mellow murmur he'd been hoping for. A strong green tint 6" down indicated copper, but the emerging outline certainly wasn't that of a coin. What was this odd, diamond-shaped piece of metal, anyway? David and his hunting buddy, Eric, examined it closely and saw, "CHARLESTON 56 FRUITERER..." At the bottom, harder to read, there was a date... 1863. It was a slave tag, or hire badge, from Charleston, South Carolina... and a rare one, too! ""Fruiterer" (fruit vendor) is among the scarcest occupational designations, and one such tag from 1817 brought $10,450; due to condition, David's has been appraised at roughly half that amount. It was, he says in his story starting on page 30, "A Spine-chilling Find!" |
