Sometimes one thing naturally leads to another, and that's the way it was when Larry Brown found a pocket watch and chain. "I was hunting at an old homestead in New York- by the way, special thanks to Debbie for permission to detect on her property- and I got a big signal. First I found the end of the chain and though it might be a necklace, but it kept on going, and so did I, until it led me right to the watch!" It was so tangled up in the roots of a tree that Larry spent half an hour getting it out, but the effort paid off when he freed the antique timepiece and saw that it was in near-perfect condition. The fancy 14K-plated Dueber hunting case houses a 15-jewel Elgin watch, and on the back is engraved "Maude Sedam, 1897." (There is also an indecipherable middle initial.) The long chain attached is gold-filled. "A stone is missing from the slide of the chain," notes Larry, "but you can't have everything. The next day, I took the watch to a jeweler, and with a little cleaning, it actually worked!"
