Heading Bone-backed silver button
Description On a trail 220 years old, on a tract of private property tucked away somewhere near Saratoga, Gene Salvino heard it once again: the unmistakable sound of a good, deep target. The ID readout told him this wasn't just another musketball or pewter button, either. Carefully coaxing it up, he brushed away the clinging clay and saw first a silvery edge and then the number 62. Gleaming up at him was an officer's button from the British 62nd Regiment of Foot! From research, Gene knew that the 62nd, later known as the Wiltshire Regiment, had arrived in Quebec in May 1776 and served under "Gentleman" John Burgoyne in the campaign of '77. Suddenly those lines from a history book came to life for him! "Looking at it, I couldn't help wondering if it might have fallen from the uniform of Colonel John Anstruther, the regiment's commanding officer," he recalls. "You know, this small, bone-backed silver button isn't the largest relic I've found, and it wouldn't tip any scales... but believe me, in terms of history, it's my biggest find of the year!"
