By far the rarest coin to surface in 1999 was the one reported by Leon Aponte! Detecting at a farm dating back to Colonial days, Leon was ready to head for home when he heard a weak but unmistakable signal and decided to check it out. The deeper he delved, the louder it grew, until finally at 14" he uncovered a huge silver coin dated 1776... a Continental Dollar! Earliest of the U.S. pattern coins, it's seldom seen even in pewter (hundreds), scarcer still in brass (a dozen or so), and incredibly rare in silver- one source says just three others have been confirmed. Replicas are common, of course; but there's no doubt about Leon's find, which has been fully authenticated. And although a hole near the rim may diminish the numismatic value, it can't detract >from the impact and appeal of this extraordinary American treasure! |
