| Description |
Jelaire prefers not to reveal her last name, or the ghost town where she found eight gorgeous $20 gold pieces valued at over $9,000! So, we'll skip those details and let her tell the rest of the story...
"My husband Jerry and I have been metal detecting at various ghost town sites for quite a while now, along with our friends Glen, Robin, Tom, and Kat. On this occasion we were at a site selected by Glen.
"My first good signal was a horseshoe about 6" deep. Then, about 25' further on, I got a strong but broken signal. Remembering my husband's advice to always dig strong signals, I began unearthing what I suspected to be an old tin can. Instead, three gold coins flashed before my eyes!
"I let out a scream for Jerry, who was over the hill. Luckily, Glen was walking on the hilltop and heard me yell, 'Gold coins!' He relayed the good news to Jerry and Tom, and then they all came running!
"By this time I'd regained enough composure to realize that the coins were $20 gold pieces... double eagles. Were there more? In a state of disbelief I began swinging the detector. As the signals continued, the men dug each new target, checking and rechecking the soil. Finally, after about 20 minutes, I had eight $20 gold coins. Not finding any more in the immediate area, we broke for lunch.
"That afternoon, I stayed in camp to 'recuperate' while the rest went back to hunt the area again. Glen did find another double eagle about 10' down the hill from the spot where my cache had been a fair and fitting reward for a friend who had shared one of his hunting sites. And not to be completely outdone, the next day my husband dug an 1856-S $2.50 gold coin."
All of Jelaire's coins are Coronet type $20 gold pieces from the San Francisco Mint, ranging in date from 1866 to 1882, and grading between XF-45 and MS-61, according to a well-known Western dealer.
"I doubt that I'll ever make a more thrilling and fabulous find," she says. "But I do wonder if any other miners around that old ghost town left a few gold coins behind!"
