| Description |
The year was 1789, a new nation had chosen its first president, and Washington Inaugural buttons were worn with pride. One of those buttons, and an uncommon one at that, somehow made its way to a Low Country plantation in South Carolina. From there, fast-forward to 1999, and you'll arrive just in time to hear David Kuykendall's detector sound off over that same button. Listed in Albert's standard reference as variety WI 10, it rates a super-scarce R-6- fewer than half a dozen extant. Indeed, it seems to be the only new example to have come along since Albert's book was published in 1976. Regrettably, this rarity has been ravaged by time and the elements, driving down its value from an estimated $6,000 in Fine condition to perhaps a little over $1,000. Still, it's likely to be a mighty long time before anyone finds a better one!
