Lee Holland says it was a pretty good weekend of metal detecting. Maybe you'll recall his account of it, "Give Me Liberty," in the Nov. '95 issue of W&ET. Not only was he finding old coins by the dozen, but quite a few were rare and valuable, including the one shown here. According to the professional numismatist who authenticated and appraised it, "Mr. Holland's coin is a 1793 Rittenhouse-Eckfeldt large copper cent, Wreath design, minted between April 9 and July 17, 1793. A total of 63,353 coins were minted, of which only 6% survive." Grading the coin Very Fine+, he added, "It is the finest Œdug' large cent I have ever seen, with a current value of at least $4,000." Lee's reaction? "It's hard to believe a penny's worth that much money, but just imagine what the fellow who lost it over 200 years ago would think!"
