Jason, here is a privy dig me and my daughter did last spring, south of Topeka 30 miles. The easiest way to find them is with copper dowsing rods, then verify with a spring steel probe. Dowsing is the only way to go! Probing gets tiring after an hour! I've also got a dowsing video on my youtube site, its about finding graves.

Hey Jason nice to talk to you. Yep, the privy will be softer and there should be some layering of the ground. Meaning the ash and dirt that they threw in to keep the smells down would create layering under ground. You should be able to feel the glass or brinks and other debris that people tossed in as well. Unless of course the pit is deeper than your probe. A spring steel probe is a must with a tip that will bring a soil sample up. Most of our pits are 6 to 8 feet deep. So sometimes it takes a little tap hole to get the probe down a bit further. Its all about the feel in my book. You will feel a noticeable difference in the ground where the privy was. Hi Jason
