  • I have seen you lending a hand to people in search of a claim my names collin McCracken/dillon I have done a lot of small time prospecting in the few areas that are open to public and a lil bit on a friends claim thing is I'd like to have a place I can stay and camp two weeks at a time or longer if I'm in a good hole and really I've been running around like a chicken with its head cut off talking to anyone and everyone and I can only say most people have been far less than helpful.. I'd like either maybe find and enter a partner **** with someone who possibly isn't able to mine on their own anymore ( cuz we all know as a prospector its rough on the body) or b able to buy one for a good price ( not too high considering its just me and my lil family mining and I dont need a lot of area) or possibly a lease to own option i dont know exactly how it all works when u get into the claims but I'd love to find out everything I can
I am Toby Long. I have been an avid detectorist for the last 20 some years with admirable success. A couple friends and myself are planning a motorcycle trip to Deadwood on Independance Day week. Out of the blue two of us thought, "Perfect opportunity to try panning for gold!" As our excitement grows, so do our ideas. We have decided maybe we should take detectors with us! The only problem is we don't have a clue on what to do, where to go, who to talk to or is this dream even feasible. We have from several days to a week to search. Quite honestly we are in this for the thrill of the hunt. It would be such a thrill to find a gold nugget. Although, our success would be measured by the fun we had not the gold we find or don't find. I fully understand how treasure hunting works. Striking out doesn't equal disappointment. Please, kind sir, I seek your advice. What kind of things do we need to consider, research, apply for etc. This will be the first adventure of this kind for either of us.
Jim, That all sounds good. I think I got the lr2000 figured out pretty well so far. Also started using the usgs website Mineral Resources Data System to look at where old mines are located to help with areas to look at and also gives helpful information on amount of gold pulled out of the areas. I found it pretty neat. Also my number is 605 770-2254 so if you see that show up its not a telemarketer.

    Jim,

Sorry to hear about your dad. Hope things are starting to look up. You did upgraded to a chevy now! ;) Thanks for asking around and keeping your ears open. Im still scanning around on the blm website. Going to email them about an area up by boulder canyon to get more information on the land. Their reports dont really say where the claims are exactly located as far as i can tell, but still open for getting ahold of anything. The GPAA sites are nice but I'd like something a little more personal.

    Hey Jim,

Been a while thought I'd check in and see how things are going. Hopefully you made it through our winter storm alright. It kind of put a little damper on the prospecting for a couple weeks! Hoping for nice weather this weekend. Water is running through the husker claim so ill have to take the sluice box up and move more material than usual.

Exciting news for me, I got offered a full time engineering job here in Rapid so it looks like I'm gonna be sticking around for a while. I was reading around on the forms about buying/filing claims in the hills and whatnot and what to avoid so I though Id ask if you hear of anything about someone selling a claim if you could give me a heads up. Was using the LR2000 to do some looking for open land but then the government went and shut down so the website was down.

    Happy Prospecting!

Dont worry about the delay.. I understand being busy, hardly had the chance to get on my computer within the last week myself. Glad to hear the anniversary went well. I should be out in Rapid the weekend of the 27th and I'll have some free time if that would work, if not I'd probably go hit up the mary ann again. Otherwise good luck for the rest of the summer and let me know how that recirculating system works when you get it up and running!

    Hey Jim,

Was just checking on how things are going. How was the anniversary trip? I finally became a part of the GPAA and headed up there Sunday for a little fun. Wasn't there longs so I didn't find too much. But as for me for the rest of the summer its looking like I'll be moving back to Tripp for a few months for a part time job so I don't know how much I'll be around here. Let me know the next time you head out and I'd make the trip back, I might even still be here this weekend. If anything I'd be back in September and would still be interested in doing some digging on your claim.

    Thanks
    Dan H
That would be pretty awesome Jim! Let me know about when it would work. I'm pretty free for most weekends. Thanks for the opportunity!

    Thanks
    Dan H
Wow that's pretty neat! Its pretty cool seeing younger kids get interested in outdoor activities. Indeed google is great, its the only reason I've been making it through school. So this might be a bit out there on the limb, but I was wondering if you would be interested in letting me do some digging up there myself. I would dig in a spot other than where you are digging. We could work out some sort of deal or whatever you would be open to. If not I understand.

    Thanks
    Dan H
Oh ok thats not too bad! How often do you make it out?

What I did is the day i came back from up there I searched "James VanHout gold claim mystic" and clicked on the first link which was a thread post on this form so it seemed like a good place to get in contact with you.

    Thanks
    Dan H
Jim, thanks for the information! The last thing I wanna do is be digging somewhere I shouldn't be. I realize I need to join the GPAA and/or the BHPC so I can get access to maps of claims before I go out again. Just on a curious note, how much gold do you normally find on a given day out of a spot like that?

    Thanks
    Dan H
    Hi Jim,

Im Dan Hoff from the Rapid City area and was up by Mystic today looking for some areas to go do some gold digging when I stumbled across your claim. I was wondering if that claim encompassed the entire hill there or if it was just a section. It looked like there has been alot of digging in that area and I was curios as to being able to do some digging myself in another spot on the hill. Anything to help would be much appreciated!
Jim. I got the map today. That is one GREAT map! Thank you very much. Can I pay you for it? If not, I have many copies of bulletins and gold related books I can send to read. You went ABOVE AND BEYOND! Just let me know, my friend. Tnx agn. Terry
i have so many fossilized shark teeth its not even funny and 3 are new from a actual mako shark my uncle caught i also have a big tooth from a big 4 ft barricuda i caught off myrtle beach
thank you for such a warm welcome B H Prospector i do have one question is fossilized shark teeth heavy enough to stay in your gold pan
    Thanks for the likes.
I left a visitor message for glorymorris "SO I guess your trolling venture was a bust. You'll never find anyone who is against beer in a bar, or in your case a pub."
    Hi 42 merc,
I did reply I hope you got it, maybe not. Sluicing on the GPAA claims is ok to do. The two best claims are the Husker near sturgis but it is dry after early june. The maryann at mystic is the other. This claim boarders one of my claims on the south and has castle creek running through both claims. Some pretty nice gold has been coming out of the maryanne the past two years. I have gotten some nice gold from there. The maryanne has water year round. As I said the husker dries up by mid june but this year it never had water because of the lack of snow last winter. There is also the migg claims on rapid creek. I don't know much about this claim. If you are not a GPAA member I would suggest you join so you can use these claims legally. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. I will help any way I can. I will warn you that once you catch gold fever there is no cure.

    Good Luck!

I am looking to getting into gold hunting.I pmed you once maybe you did not see it? I read everything you have posted and it sounds like gpaa is a good place to start. I could use more advice though.I see dredging is out. Is panning and sluicing the only way to find gold in the hills legally ? Panning would be way to slow and is there enough water to sluice ? I do not want to show up with equipment I can not use or that will not work. I am looking at mid may to mid june.

    Thank for any info.
