  1. iPhone to return...

Went out for a short hunt this Sunday and my second target was an iPhone! The battery was dead, but otherwise in great condition being 3" under the dry sand. Just got it back after a friend charged it up. It is password locked so I don't know how to find the owner. May have to take it to an...
  2. Who knows Placerville? Trip planned...

Howdy all... I've got a trip planned to visit my folks who live up near Oregon. After visiting for a week or so my Dad and I will be taking a road trip from there down to see my hometown of Placerville-- I haven't been there since I was about 14 (mid 70's). Word has it the area is crawling with...

  4. First post with finds in awhile...

Went out for two hours this evening, not expecting to find much since tourist season is now over. All my good targets were coins & 1 token, and it still turned out better than I expected, with 3 foreign coins and a Sac. dollar. Not my best hunt ever, but better than being skunked.
  5. Mine again... Wooden nickel!

Found this wooden nickel on Ebay a few weeks back, and got it for a fair price. Just one of those things I collect! Anyway, I figured I could take it to my lab and remove the gob of goo from the one side and the paint from the other. Turns out that the 'paint' was actually white out, coming...
  6. engagement ring

Here's some beach finds from May of last year that made my year. For the fancy engagement ring I traced the hallmark and pattern to Zales, and got a replacement value estimated @ ~$2000.00. 51 diamonds in white 14k, the largest is .20 carat (.5 c.t.w.) The other ring also 14k w/ 9 diamonds...
  7. Long time no see--- back after 4 years?!

Now I've got a new job, more time, and a bit of a break. Last job had me so stressed I couldn't get a minute to breathe. Just noticed the last time I logged in was Sept 2009! at 4:00 in the morning??? And how things have changed-- learning how to do everything in the new (to me) system...
  8. Odd-shaped rejects

Here's a couple egg-shaped marbles I got from a scuba diver yesterday-- he had found these in the Ohio river behind an old marble factory in Michigan, probably thrown out as rejects. Any idea which factory that might be? They are beautiful marbles, the pale blue is clear glass w/ opaque white...
  9. Marble hoard purchased

Here's a small portion of a 20-year collection I just bought-- fun stuff! Note pee-wees in lower left corner, catseye shooters along far left, and the marble inthe box by itself on the left is vaseline glass.
  10. My first good marble find, found in England

Got this while I was in England metal detecting last year. It was just laying on top of the dirt after a recent rain. I saw it from over 100 feet away! Maybe someone who knows marbles can tell me about it? I suspect it is an old 'wire pull', possibly 100 years old, but not sure. It has a few...
  11. This weeks silver

This week's silver Haven't posted in awhile (I hope y'all will forgive me!) but I am getting back into it. Went out this week and found a silver chain (58.5 grams) and two silver rings. Also a gold-plated pendant and a kid's gumball ring.
  12. Toxic jewelry - gumball rings recalled

Heard this in the news today and thought it might be of interest... in brief a boy in Oregon was taken to a hospital for severe illness.? He was tested and found to have gotten a high dose of lead from a ring he swallowed which was then trapped in his stomach. He did recover, fortunately, but...
  13. Sniping silver

Went out to a cobble wash without any tools at all, and found an interesting spot to dig in.? With nothing but my bare hands I dug up about 2 lbs. of sinkers, 2 brass screws, and 5 coins, including a silver quarter-- badly corroded.? I can just barely make out the head and part of one wing of...
  14. Planted park hunt/ finds

'Planted' park hunt/ finds Today I had an outing with my club-- they planted 2 rolls of silver dimes and $20 in clad dimes. Doesn't sound like much, but I picked up 16 silvers, including 9 Mercs and 7 Roosies, and an incidental 1940 S wheatie. Another 'Members Only' free hunt-- I love it! Lots...
  15. More beach treasure...

Went out last night to check out the changes in the sand. Things are definitely drifting around now. Shells are all over the place, and my usual hunting area is littered with aluminum scrap. But just a llittle further, and Bam! I got a nice silver ring with a Celtic weave pattern. Not long after...
  16. beach treasure of a different sort

Went out last night at low tide.? The sand has all shifted around and the beach here is totally different.? The slope changed and loose sand with lots of aluminum has buried the best stuff deeper. I wasn't skunked, though-- well, it DID smell like skunk out!? But some fresh shells had washed...
  17. surprise!

I went out yesterday for the first time in a week, expecting not to find anything.? Temperatures are cooling down, and not so many people going to the beach these days.? So I figured I'd keep my expectations low.? But 15 minutes into my hunt I found this beauty-- 32 natural diamonds in 14k gold!
  18. Viking burial site, England

Anybody see the news about the Viking burial site?? It was found by a guy with a metal detector in NW England.? He found a copper brooch and took it to a museum to report it.? They determined it could only have come from a Viking site and started an excavation, only to discover 6 intact Viking...
  19. Scouts stuff

Here's some Boy Scouts neckerchief knot covers I found in parks over the years.? The 'locket' was found on a beach, badly corroded, but says 'Gril Scouts' on it.? It had a spring or something that rusted away-- not sure what it is exactly.? Any ideas?
  20. funky stuff

Don't know if this qualifies as 'Best Finds' fodder, but these items were 'interesting' to say the least! I found the bottle by the cap, and the seal was never broken!? Unfortunately the back label was lost. As for the pipes, These were soaked in acetone for a week to clean them up.
