  1. As the season is winding down in upstate NY

Temperature was 17 degrees last night, so frost is coming soon, but with the day temperature in the uppers 40s, I went back out again today. Not much to report but a very worn and corroded 1871 Indian Head (i think but fairly certain). I had to use my micro scope to see the date. Its been an...
  2. been on a tear, but some weird stuff

so since my last post, some weird stuff has happened but some great stuff too. first. I got a signal for dime. I dug the plug and then searched the hole with my pinpointer. still in the hole, so i dug more out. 1965 dime. Nothing big. It was 4 inches down, but what weird, when I ran the...
  3. Pre 1900 Streak ends

The only camera I have is on my phone and its not a very good phone. I know you have asked for pictures in a few of my posts. Sorry. I have a lot going on right now, including purchasing a house, but I will try to get a good camera and start taking pictures.
  4. Pre 1900 Streak ends

Shortly after my last last post back at the end of July 2021 I had an injury that kept me from going out until recently. In that post, I mentioned that last nine coins I had found (at that time) were all pre-1900. They were in order, 1881 Indian Head, 1863 Indian Head, 1864 Indian Head bronze...
  5. Finds from July 23 and July 24 2021

Been getting out more and more now that I have more free time and nicer weather. Went to my spot on both Friday and Saturday for about 2 hours each. Friday got me an 1864 CN indian head to go along with the 1864 bronze one I got last week, and an 1838 large cent. Saturday was even better...
  6. Didnt have to wait another 38 years

Got out last night for the first time in a few weeks. Been hunting this place since 2003 and still finding decent coins. Last night, got an 1863 Indian Head, 1864 Copper Indian Head and my second ever Seated Dime. Got my first one a few weeks ago. That one was an 1891-O. Last nights was...
  7. 19th century coin spill

Nice finds but i think the coin you think is an Indian Head Penny, is actually a Flying Eagle Cent. I am fairly certain that I see the eagles wing tips, especially at the left edge of the observe If I had to guess, it looks like I see a 7 after the the 5, so I am thinking 1857.
  8. First Ever Seated Dime

Got out last night for the first time in a few weeks. Been hunting this place since 2003 and still finding nice coins although it took a little bit to find anything good last night. Ended up with a 1933 Wheat Cent, some cufflinks and then a 1891-O dime and 1888 Indian Head in the same hole...
  9. Equinox 800 detecting depth

When I first got my Equinox 800 last year, one of the first things I dug was a .22 projectile at 8 inches down. I was really impressed by the detectors ability to locate such a small target at such a depth and the signal be very strong. Since then, I have dug coins at 10-12 inches. I dont...
  10. Is this a joke??

My guess is that its supposed to be $4.25 and they just typoed.
  11. Coin Spills

I posted this back on June 17, 2006. Still baffles me to this day. <<< I got a signal that read 81 on the XLT at 2". I usually don't dig stuff this shallow because its always clad and I figure I would save it for the next generation of hunters, when it will be considered old to them. But I was...
  12. Man I wish I had a camera

Thank you PBK, that is the one. Obviously, its not in that good of condition, having been dug out very destructive soil (even newer coins are barely identifiable) and being between 7 and 8 inches deep. Any idea of when it was minted? I'd say 1892, since it commemerates the 400th discovery, but...
  13. Man I wish I had a camera

Ok, I found this "coin" the other night that I do not know what it is, and I am hoping someone here can help. Its copper, slightly bigger then a half dollar. On one side, in the center of the "coin" are several men in a small boat. Some of the men appear to be natives, while others are obviously...
  14. My oddest multi-coin hole find

Heya folks. Haven't been around too much lately, it seems we got about a month of non-stop rain here in NY, and with other things going on, I haven't got out much to hunt lately. I did manage to get out a few times this week so far though, as the rain kind of stopped. I got out for a few hours...
  15. First Post of the new THing season

Thank you all. Its great to be back out doing what I love again. I really should move further south then upstate New York, somewhere where I can hunt year round. I promise, I will try to get some pics. But stayed tuned, this year is really shaping up to be a great year. I will post in a new...
  16. Found my first Seated coin

Congrats on your first seated. I have been waiting since 1982 for my first seated. Still waiting, but I am feeling lucky this year. Anthony
  17. First Post of the new THing season

Hello All, I hope everyone had a pleasant winter. I had itchy fingers and feet and couldn't wait to get out, but time has been extremely limited, much like last year. I was able to get out three times in January, but the temperature here in New York got too cold and the ground finally froze...
  18. olive oil.....does it really work?

Ive only tried olive oil on my common date coppers. Yes its worked. Yes its cleaned them up nice. As a coin collector, I would not recommend cleaning anything, especially if you looking to sell, or if it was a rarity. A cleaned coin is worth much less, maybe even nothing, then a coin in its...
  19. Crazy New York Weather

Well, the 50+ weather in upstate New York melted the snow and ground enough for me to finally get out for a few hours today. Went to the old park, previously known as "hunted out". Tried the coins and jewelry program for the first time. First time hunting in a new year warranted me trying...
  20. Happy Birthday to me

My father called me the other night, on my birthday, and asked me if I got his card yet? I said no, it hadn't come yet, but maybe it would come the next day in the mail. He seemed kind nervous that the card did not arrive before my birthday. Then he started asking me about my coin collection. I...
