  3. Minie Ball..Modern Replica or old?

Thanks for the opinion and information 21stTNCav. I was mainly concerned about the patina, since I thought they almost always came out of the ground tan. But is sounds like this is not always the case. The location I found it was not a place where there would be any competitive weapons fire for...
  4. Minie Ball..Modern Replica or old?

I am definitely not an expert on Minie balls. I am looking for opinions as to whether this is a modern replica? or original? I found the minie ball on the left today (The one on the right was found a couple years ago). The thing that confuses me is that it doesn't have the patina I would...

  7. Best Find Since Detecting!

Yes they all the rings were found in parks. If I remember right this particular platinum ring came in pretty much about one notch above pulltab on the Ace250. There was a subtle difference from the normal sound that made me dig. I also think it was a little more stable than normal items that...

  9. Best Find Since Detecting!

I've been away from posting on-line for a while for a multitude of reasons, but figured I'd come back with my best for this year. This is my third year detecting and I had two "firsts" this month. Last weekend I found a platinum and diamond anniversary/wedding band marked "950" platinum. I just...

  12. Need help identifying these little metal men...

In 1881 John G. Borden (of the Borden, Inc - the Dairy Company family) took over this farm. He bought the farm from a John P. Andrews. This farm in a town called Wallkill in the Hudson Valley of New York. His father, Gail Borden, was the inventor of the condensed milk process. So I believe the...
  13. Need help identifying these little metal men...

When I got home today I went down and did a tally of men to the numbers on their sides. Here are the tally's ... #1 - 2 men #3 - 2 men #4 - 2 men #5 - 3 men #7 - 1 man #8 - 2 men Since they seem to be cast I'm wondering if these could be a mold number? Since most of them are not complete its...
  14. Need help identifying these little metal men...

I tend to agree with them being attached to the barn somehow ... mainly because that's been a consistant message I've received over the last 30 years ... as I believe, historically, it has always been a farm, sheep or dairy, and have never hear anything about manufacture or toys. Great thought...
  15. OLD PENCIL ID

Don't know much about it ... but very nice find! ;D
  16. Need help identifying these little metal men...

I found that I had a picture of the barn where I found the little men. It's been restored by the current owners, but you can get an idea of the size and layout. You can ignore the two guys in front of it ..
  17. Need help identifying these little metal men...

Interesting idea ... Not vents... but the roof does have approximately 10 dormers down each side for the length of the barn ... maybe they were some decoration on the dormers?
  18. Need help identifying these little metal men...

Thanks, it's a plausible explanation, but I'll keep investigating too ... yeah I always thought they were cool too. Unfortunately there are no old timers in the neighborhood anymore, other than my parents
  19. Need help identifying these little metal men...

Have to admit, you may be right about these ... thanks for your help. Wish I could find a picture of one of these to positively identify them. But that may be an impossible task. Especially if they are custom made..
  20. Need help identifying these little metal men...

What position do you think they may have been mounted? Head pointing up the slope toward the peak? Standing up with the pointed foot in some sort of bracket? Standing up, facing outward, mounted to a bracket with a wire though the hands? Trying to get a visual in my mind.
