How do you tell the 82 coppers from the zinc?

TIA

Nice going on your finds Joe, and for liberating ten more wheats from circulation.

I swipe the 82's over my MXT, and it tells me if it is copper or zinc. That is the easiest way I know.

You have to weigth the coins. There are two ways:

1) electronic scale. (which I use)
2) put a penny minted after 1982 on a popsicle stick, but a folcrum in the middle (so it looks like a teeter tawter) and put the 1982 on the other side. If it balances, it a zinc penny, if it drops to the side of the 1982, it's copper.

The weights are 2.5 grams for zinc or 3.11 grams for copper.

Very nice!
I don't really see the point in going that thorough into your coins though. Not the copper pennies at any rate. What are you going to do, have them melted?

It didn't take long when the value of silver increased to the point when a silver dime was worth .25 cents and they all disappeared. With a copper cent being worth 2.4 cents and the current copper plated zinc costing just over face value to make, there will be a change in composition soon. This will increase the value of the copper cent, and if copper it self keeps rising, like silver and gold, a copper cent may be worth 6-8 times face, as silver is today, and then it would be time to sell. If crooks are willing to steal air conditioners, electrical wiring and anything not bolted down for the copper value, then cents will soon be wanted for their copper content. I'm just getting a jump start.

By the way, nickle is the same way. Currenty it costs 7.4 cents to make a 5 cent coin. By the time it hits 10-12 cents.... no more nickles to be found in circulation. Laugh now, but history has a way of repeating itself, and this myfriend, is not the first time.

Also.... Do you remember what a 1932 S or D quarter was worth in 1998? Around $35, now, $175. There are no more or less available.... So what happened?

Ah, yes, the state quarter program. Got others interested in collecting quarters. Supply and demand. (gotta love capitalism). With the 100 anniversary of the Lincoln Cent in 2009, and a scheduled 4 or 5 diffent lincoln cents to be released, will this spark the same kind of interest?

You never know. Then again, who, in 1895 thought an indian head penny would be worth 100+ x face? Or in 1958, a wheat penny worth 5 x face?

Best of all, it costs 1 cent now, will never go down and can always be redeemed at a rate of 100 for a dollar. So what do you have to lose?

Plus, it's a great past time to spend time with my dad, and it helps me teach my kids about history.

Whe you go into a bank and ask for a box of pennies how many would they give to? Or what is the cost of a box thanks.
