Revisited a 1700s cellar hole that I?ve done well at in the past. Brief hunt but managed to find a few targets that I missed. Last target of the night was this 1765 Russian Kopek, buddy of mine ID?d it for me. Not sure if this is a common find for others but definitely a first for me. I live in south eastern Mass, not sure if anyone has any info on the circulation of these coins. Did the best I could with pics of my coin. I included some pics of a cleaned up one that I found on EBay. Thanks for looking. 58C13E80-BB7B-42DF-B404-A576FA7F54FF.jpeg EBF4138C-4541-42E4-AD9F-C45A01D12552.jpeg 51CC08D9-EF2D-448B-B8D3-4902749DD907.png 66A89536-1997-44D0-AF30-A3FD81C00BD3.png

That,s an unusual one.Are you near the coast?Maybe a Russian sailor off a ship in port lost it.Or maybe an American sailor picked it up on a visit to Russia?Just my imagination running wild.Pay no heed if it seems senseless. My Mom said my mind was a vast storehouse of useless knowledge.I loved her anyway!

Congrats on a very rare find !

Be very careful if you decide to clean it - if you remove the green patina you will loose detail along with it !

Great find! I found the same coin on a colonial site this spring. Two kopecks, Catherine the second of Russia. Russian Empire was actively trading with the west coast of North America in late 1700s. There could also be a possibility that some British troops brought it back from France in early 1800s. Russians were stationed in Paris after Napoleon's defeat. I found it in Canada, it could easily reach US from here. But most probable possibility is that the coin traveled towards your areas in the way that we will never know. In any case a very cool find. Congratulations!

Those do pop up on the west coast associated with Russian fur trading forts. In Canada anything that could pass for a penny or half penny was used in Upper and Lower Canada during the first half of the 19th century...including Greek and Roman coins from time to time.

This is a fact I'm also aware of... although I've not heard of a Greek or Roman coin being found on an early site in my area of Canada. :icon_scratch:

Nice find AP. Russian coins are not a common find here in SE MA. I snagged an 1812 Kopek copper some years ago. But back in the day, just about any copper might be accepted in a cash payment. A kopek had more copper than most other similar coinage.
