UPDATE, from DON OF SOUTH JERSEY, THIS COIN IS A 1794 LIBRARY CAP, THE DATE PLAYED TRICKS ON US!!!few hours to kill this afternoon so I stopped by this 1719 house where ive never had much. I pulled a few buttons out last fall but I figured I'd give it a shot.
(BOY, IAM SURE GLAD I DID)
The ground just lite up with targets,
First coin was the kg111, then i got the barber dime..Was hoping for older silver, but hey its silver.
Then i dug a few buttons, The sportsmen button with the dog on it I really like! Then came the chocolate tweezers. .That the second pair to come from this site.
Then it happen, I was walking down the side of the house and i get this weak signal, so i started playing with the detector changing some settings to see if i could get a better hit on it..
I was able to clean up the signal some, but not TID reading..
But it was that high wispering tone that you just love!!!!
Dug down about 9inch a bam!!!!
This green disc comes out..
I pick it up, and right away i know its a capped bust by the thickness. .
I say come on chain cent. (NOPE)
Not it..lol.
Anyway i was still really happy..
I wiped it a little bit in the field, and thought i seen 94..
So i checked the side for the leaf,
Hoping the leaf was down to make it the 93 head...
Didn't know it was much better.
After a bath in distilled water, followed by a mineral oil bath..
Yes!!!!! Its a 1793 CAPPED BUST..
My first one.
I have found 1793 half cent before, and 2 1794 Large cents..But the 93 has eluded in till today.
If you could not tell..
Iam a happy man...
Thanks for looking, and sorry about this long winded post..
Just really wanted to share this with you guys.
My wife just dont get it...lol.
Ps, i had to take a pick of the house just to show how cool it it..
George

Bummer George! Sorry for the disappointment but at least we all had quite a bit of excitement for a while. And it's still a great find so don't hang your head. Nice work Don!

Thanks so much Don..
Per are conversation, i was pretty certain it was the 94, but all i keep seeing was the 93 clear as day..
Although your eyes definitely see what you want them to see..lol.
Are you able to tell if its the 93 head ? Maybe the S19b??
Thanks again, you sure are a asset to this forum. .

One thing I learned over the years, never trust a corroded coin ID by date alone, corrosion plays tricks on our eyes, thus other attributes have to be taken into account, in fact for a lot of coins the date is not needed for attribution of year and sometimes variety. No, it is not any of the 1793 heads, for one of the same reasons as it is not a 1793, the letter T should be over the forelock, not the letter R. It is closer to what Rhedden said, S-31 possibly, I have not looked closely to attribute the 1794 variety, sooo many of them. :)

Now I get it..
Even on the 93 heads T should be over the forelock..
I see it on my other coin now..
I thought it had to do with the curl ..Thanks again Don..
Ohhh wise one..lol..

I know what you mean Don. A number of years ago I found a corroded V nickel in a field, and it looked to me like a 1913. As you probably know, that's the incredibly rare date with only 5 known. And the last one at auction went for something like $4 million. I knew it was an extreme longshot, but I decided to spend a few bucks on sending it in to ANACS. They said it was a 1912, but from the pic below you can see why I thought it was a "3". Too bad I was wrong or I could have retired a few years earlier. Click on the thumbnail to see the date better. I still don't see how they got a "2" out of that.

Don,

I see what you are saying about the coin and that it fits or more fits the 1794 S-31!! In George's 1st pic of the coin, the Date appears to have a "3" but the 2nd pic, it appears more like a "6". This is really confusing and like you stated, is why it may have to be attributed Date and Variety by matching Dies used for all the years of the Liberty Cap Large Cents, then match a Reverse Die Marriage. I had hope that maybe it was a 1793 NC-6 or even a previously unknown Variety such as a Transitional Piece (i.e. such as a 1793 Dated Liberty Cap with a 1794 Head with Denticles instead of Beads) but this may not be the case! If the coin is truly not a 1793 dated Liberty Cap Large Cent, then it is likely a much lesser valuable coin unless it is a rarer Variety. Bummer!

Bill when I first looked at it closely it did look like a 3, but then I put a 2 into my mind and then I could see the 2, so they were unfortunately correct 1912 it is.....Our eyes and our mind do play tricks on us, don't they. :)

Oh no!!! George! I hope I didn't plant the seed in your mind of a 1793 after you texted me! Keep digging. Skill, luck and karma is on your side brother. Besides a Chain Cent should be your first 1793 one cent piece.

Oh, and it's still an amazing find!!! Congrats and let's get in a dig soon. How about that new 1780 spot I told u about buddy??? Lol
