1840s error Pennies

Found these today while going through some stuff for my grandparents. The 1849 coin is missing the 1 and the other had a foreign object that pushed through the coin when it was stamped. Thoughts on what might have caused either.

The 1848 is not an error, that was damage done after it was minted. You can tell by the bulge on the reverse, if it was done while it was in the dies, that bulge could not occur. The 1849 could either be damage or something was filling the number 1 on the die, no way to tell which from the picture. I would look carefully for scrape marks where the 1 should be, for some reason people would alter numbering and lettering on coins back in those days. Not much else to do for amusement I guess!
