So I purchased a new detector, The Blisstool V5.. Its said to go really really deep, for a VLF.
The reason for the buy is my old sites I have are starting to dry up.
The only things i have been finding are deep iffy signals.
So i thought i would give this one a try..
Not a everday detector. No screen, no VDI numbers to go by, and only one tone, and scratches for iron.
So glad i bought it!!!
Not that it was really deep or anything but would probably never would of dug it..If I was not listening really close..
Sorry for going on about the detector..
And the good part..
I was just about to go, it was so hot today. I already found a 1865 IH.
A flat button a musket ball. ( the musket ball was crazy deep.
12 or so inches down)
And i said just one more descent find and im leaving. .
Boy I am so glad i said that!!!!
I flip the plug and I see this gold edge. .I almost pooped myself. .lol
I grab my phone and take a pic..
Then I knocked a little dirt off and all i see is 1849..I stand up and started to do a dance..SAYING I FOUND A GOLD COIN..I FOUND A GOLD COIN. OHHHH YEAAAA..LOL.
Now I dont want to rub it so i grab a hand full of the dirt and put it in my film canister. .Shut my detector off and head straight to the truck..
My heart was pounding out of my chest..Called my wife, I new she was in class teaching, but hey!!!! I just found a gold coin!!! Lol
She told great honey now can i go back to work??? Ok i said..lol
So I got home and ran it under water .Wow dirt just fall off..
After a little bit of research.
I found out it is a coin token from the hold rush era..The first year made..
In my eyes I think that is so much cooler then a $1 dollar coin that I thought it was..
Sorry for the long winded post..
But as you see, Iam pretty excited about this find..
Thanks for looking. .
George

Yeah I'd be worried it's plated. Has that look.

If I'm recreating a gold coin and actually making it solid gold, I'm probably going to strike them and not cast them. That definitely looks cast.

Well if its plated..Its the best I have ever seen..
And its really heavy for its size..
Now you going to make me test it..
I will get back to everyone.

Ruh Roh. Hey how deep was the coin? Not that it's the tell-all but was it consistent with finds of that age?

Nice find for historical context, but definitely plated, Vino. A nice find though still.

I saw all I needed to see in that first picture George. That coin came out looking warm and beautiful, just like gold would. I think it's 100% genuine California Gold.

I too thought it looked funny at first..

It had that amusement park token kind of sheen look to it..I could be wrong..

If it is real its a killer find..

In order to test it properly you would have to cut a deep groove in it because it could be gold plated..

There's a fella on a pretty good roll lately!!
As far as finds go, real or not doesn't really matter much since the cool factor exists, it's got cool written all over it! I like it, good find!

Judging by the wear on the back rim it looks real..Near the C and 1 on the date..My buddy owns a coin shop and looks at gold coins everyday but still get fooled every now and then..
Cool find.

Thanks Johnny..
Thats what i was looking at also..
Its worn down alot..
So if it was fake or plated, i believe it would show..
And i see no signs of cast..

My favorite part about this hobby is seeing things pop out of the ground that nobody would ever expect or have on a wants list. Yes we all have gold coin on the list but this token/coin is so unique. that thing is just plain old cool buddy. Congrats on a killer find. That will display great. Glad you and the newest part of your detecting family are getting on well

Incredible!!! Way to go George! I'm no expert, so I'm not going to comment on authenticity, but it looks amazing to me! Congratulations

Wow George - it didn't take long for your most recent investment to pay off. Sounds like you've already figured out how to use that new machine. Very cool and unique find. I've never even heard of a gold token like that, much less dug one. Hope your research proves you've got the real deal there. I'm definitely pulling for ya. BTW - did you get those sifter pics I sent the other day? Good luck when you return to that increasingly interesting site.

Found this on Ebay

I had a coin store for 20 years. I have a few of these. The real gold ones have a denomination on them. Like dol, doll,dollar... they are cool though...
