Got permission to hit an 1840’s house yard today, didn’t find much, but I did find this shield nickel. After cleaning it, the date looks like 1865 to me. When I looked them up, the first official date for issuing them is 1866, but apparently some of the earliest one did have a date of 1865. What do you think?

Nice shield nickel!
Scrub the piss outta it with steel wool and that will highlite the date and also bring some "life" back to the coin where it doesn't look like a brown turd like most dug nickels do. Coin has no numismatic value so no worries. It'll still be heavily pitted but it'll clean up some. Here's my last season nickels from 5 yrs ago when I used to coin shoot, all except the war nickels got scrubbed with steel wool.....

I think it has to be 1866 if this site is accurate:
Either way a great find! Congrats!

Actually they did make an 1865, but they are rare.
well not according to these folks??? They may have made prototypes but I can't imagine any of those getting into circulation.

This has some useful info. I've been collecting for 6 years and have never heard of an 1865 shield nickel, but I could be wrong ;)
