I was over in a nearby town buying a couple of antique bottles when I happened upon the old train depot. It was built in 1908. The city was building a new road to it and had excavated a lot of dirt. They had removed the first foot or more of soil and hauled away. I would love to know where they dumped it. But there were still some piles of dirt on the sides of the new road so I got out to check it. I wasn't even going to bring detector but I always seem to run into an opportunity to detect when I don't have detector in the truck. So I loaded it up. And glad I did. Found this 1875 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. She's a bit beat up but a beauty. I found an 1876 Seated quarter a couple years back so I need the dime now. I'll add the bottles I picked up also. A nice Mt. Vernon. And the amethyst soda bottle is an eye catcher.

Like the slug plate bottles, the purple one must have been exposed to sunlight for a long time to attain that violet tone. The other clear slug plate bottle will turn purple too if you expose it to intense UV, some people do this on purpose.

Great score on the 1875 Seated half. That's the same year Billy the Kid became an outlaw. Fascinating all the adventures that coin likely witnessed.

I had left my glasses at home so I couldn't tell what it was. I put it in my pocket and kept detecting. Thinking it was probably just a JFK half or a Franklin at best. I'm used to getting excited only to be let down in the end. But when I got to my brothers and asked him to look at it and he said 1875 I got pretty ecstatic then.

Very nice opportunistic find! Now the dime, as you say…and don’t forget that pesky 20 cent piece AND the half dime!😃

This is a great post and find....gives the rest of us a good lesson. Always carry a detector around in the car, even if its just a second standby detector. So if we stumble upon an unexpected site or tearout. Good job !

I totally forgot about the 20 cent piece and half dime. It just got even tougher to finish the Seated bucket list.😆

Yeah I thought I was doing good until some schmuck hit me with that “20 cent piece” nonsense awhile ago. 🤣 Almost IMPOSSIBLE to find. Good luck though!🙂
