If you enlarge the picture it looks to be 1873. I think the 1878 was a proof coin only. The nickel looks pretty good to me , I have dug them in a lot worse condition.
Have looked at a dozen times, am sure its an 8, going to bring it to work and magnify 200x with a boroscope to be sure, will post update. Thanks for replies.

Very nice my friend. I'd be happy w/the nickel condition; it looks pretty good for an 144 year old coin that's probably been in ground for at least 100 years.

Of course, I'd be happy w/a V nickel or a single Indian too...

Nice coin. If you want to clean it to make it look good. Get some GOJO in orange bottle. Soak it for a day or so, then rub it with more GOJO. It will look like the one I found and did this process.

Thanks for all the replies, after several times examing the date of this coin with a magnification boroscope it sure is an 1878 coin, thankful to have it. And thankful for this hobbie that provides so much enjoyment.

If that is indeed an 1878 Shield it is extremely rare. At first glance the date looks like 1873 to me. I sure hope it is an authentic 1878! What an awesome find.
