Good afternoon everyone. Wanted to post this find from CRH today. Still a newbie at this but seems like some doubling or Repunching around the 87 and the D. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and HH!

Good catch. Sure looks like something other than the ordinary happened there.

One thing it can not be is a repunched mint mark. Mint marks are no longer punched into dies. Mint marks have, since the early 1980s, are created as part of the die making process, as is all other numbering and lettering.

I do see something odd near the D. My default opinion, however, lacking any other evidence, is zinc rot under plating. A very common occurrence with copper plated zinc cents, commonly called Zincolns.

A common and easy, but by no means definitive, method to show zinc rot is to push against the suspect area with a toothpick. If the plating gives in any way, you have a bubble under the plating, caused by oxidation of zinc.

I wish you well on this.

Time for more coffee.

My guess is machine doubling. I could be wrong though. Here are some examples of MD and DD.

Edit: It does look like there is a D/D variety to this coin. (D punched over a D) Could be that. Here is 1 example. Few more examples on the coinfacts app.
