3 large coppers in 30 min

Had no time to hunt but had a very close spot so I said to myself a half hour is better than nothing. In that time I dug one possibly two 1861 Nova Scotia one cents and a bigger heavy copper coin. One of the Nova Scotia coins is very crusty but i believe it's is one. Maybe I'll find out later. The big coin is a mystery because I think it's british and possibly I see George iii but it is bigger,thicker and heavier than the others I found before. Maybe someone can id it for me.

Also I found a little flat button that looks like it has a man standing next to a anchor? Maybe my eyes are playing tricks but in person it sure looks like it.












Last I found two "ox balls". I wish all my short hunts turned out so well. Glad it went. Thanks for looking!

This is the large coin compared to a George iii I found not so long ago. Today's one is a lot bigger.

Thanks. Funny thing is I hunted the same field for three hours last Sunday and only got one old coin. Funny how it goes. I put the big coin in oil to see if it helps. I'm still waiting for the silver that I know is there somewhere in that field.

You might be better able to ID the large coin if you can get a fairly exacting measurement of it's diameter and thickness. Weight?

The coin I thought was a 1861 ns one cent ended up being a key date 1885 Newfoundland one cent. Lucky me!

Haha thanks. I like any spot that turns up them Newfoundland large cents because a old Newfoundland $2 gold coin could be somewhere nearby!

I think the big coin is around +30mm . It measured 1 1/8 inches. That's all I had was a tap measure in inches.

I've always called them ox knobs, but ....
I figured that big copper would be an odd one. Be nice if you could get at least a letter or two from it.

Well it could be a GEO III, but not very likely GB (great Britian) maybe one of thier colonies. But IP has a good theory going here. If you don't mind since it is pretty far gone you can be aggressive in the cleaning process to at least get a pos. ID.

That doesn't really look like much of a defined S.

The bust doesn't seem to resemble a king George, and neither does the size. The closest in that style is the 1770s/80s bust type used on the Hibernia coins, but I know of nothing that is that large. It quite resembles John Wilkinson too, who is on condor halfpennies, but again if it's over 30mm that rules it everything I've seen. It's just a weird combination to me which is why I don't think it's something very typical.... but I'm sure if something posted the answer I would think... oh yeah, duh.
