35 Flat Button Hunt, Draped Bust LC

Decided to rehit a site I had researched and scouted in my home town park last year. It is a homesite from the 1910 map, only found a a couple things last year, also saw many open dig holes and chunks of iron leaning against tree trunks. I didn’t have high hopes but wanted to rehit it with the foliage down and also check out an old road bed adjacent to this cellar hole. The original site still popped out a handful of late 1800’s into the 1900’s coins and relics, but the old road bed lead to a very early untouched site! 35 flat buttons so far including several tombac. I believe the DB LC is 1802. With the rat tail pewter spoons, buttons and coin, I think this site is one of the post Rev War land allocation settlers. Most likely a log cabin, no foundation, no stones, no brick, no glass. Only 2 pottery pieces. It doesn’t show up on any of my maps except the vague outlines of the depreciation land map. My kind of site!! Fun times.

Awesome finds! Is this piece a button? Any idea what the holes that seem punched-through are?

edit: Can't seem to attach pic. Sometimes I have this issue at work. I'm sure you know which piece I'm referring to.

You've inspired me to "satellite out" from some cellar holes I'm aware of.
In your post you mention, "vague outlines of the depreciation land map". Are you talking about LIDAR maps that show unusual depressions on the ground? I've used those looking for old mines but never thought to use them for trying to find old homesites.

Thx! It is a dandy button, you can see where the shank attached, but no idea why it would have been apparently intentionally damaged with a multitude of small holes. Mystery?

Thx! I have only found one other site that has had this concentration of buttons, also a very old site. Most mid to late 1800’s sites might pop a dozen buttons over several trips. Not sure.

Thx! The Depreciation Land Maps are a very old set of maps in my area that show ownership boundaries but no homestead locations. Lidar is a great tool to add to your research links.
