The portion you are holding onto looks like the remains of a bevel gear, which would indicate that it is a drive shaft for something and would have been mounted 90º to another shaft with an opposing gear.

The spoke nubs look heavy duty. Could be from an old iron wheeled, wheel barrow? I'll see if I have one.

What are the actual dimensions of this item, and what do the ends look like? is there any history about the area in which you found it?

I will get them when I go back. The area just had some old homes and slavery quarters around a plantation
