I had a little time to detect at an elementary school. I was hoping for a few coin and maybe some jewelry. Finding coins at the local schools is getting harder these days. The main source of lost coins at schools was children’s lunch money or change from their lunch money. About 25 years ago the school system instituted a system where the parents deposit money into an account and the children give their account number to pay for meals so no more lost coins from the lunchroom.

I did manage to find 47 coins in my 2.5 hour hunt with a face value of $2.49. I also found 3 small pendants that look like part of a bracelet or necklace, a football pendant, a copper clad bullet and a civil war minie ball.

There was no civil war activity in the town, but I have found large cents, and other older items consistent with the civil war period in a park that adjoins the school grounds. So it is possible it was lost during the civil war era or it could be a souvenir lost by a student. It is an actual civil was minie that looks like a drop that has been hit during the school construction or work being done on the playground. We will never know for sure, but it was a nice surprise and the find of the day.

I had a chance to get back to camp. I worked the staff area some more and did well. It was a little rainy and I had to stop fro a while because of a thunderstorm that went through, but I still a managed to work for 6 hours and found 286 coins (187 pennies)with a face value of $17.13, 21 camp tent pegs, a stainless spoon and fork, a penny with a hole drilled in it, a Canadian dime, a clevis pin, a belt hook for a knife, a sinker, 2 penny halves, a live 22 round, a neckerchief slide, 2 keys, 3 rope tensioners, an axe head, a few tabs and a little trash. The axe is a 3/4 axe head, smaller than a normal axe, just the right size for young scouts.

On my second trip to the scout camp I finished the last of the staff area. This part has established tent platforms that have not been moved. I worked around them and under the edges with a little success. I noticed an area beside the platforms that looked like non platform tents had been there and hit the jackpot. In an area about 20 x 20 I found over $12 in coins in about 2.5 hours.

In 6 hours the CZ21 sniffed out 283 coins with a face value of $18.72, 21 camp tent pegs, 3 padlocks, a stainless spoon and fork, 3 keys, a tacoed penny, a live 22 round, a quarter with a heart shape cut in it, 2 more vintage blank cartridges, a 1996 Atlanta Olympic pin, a maple leaf pin, a cross, a clock face, a neckerchief slide, a single blade knife with the skin missing, 9 rope tensioners, the brass part of a knife belt hook, and a bunch of nails found on the surface or in holes with coins. Picking up nails off the surface made it easier to pinpoint some of the coins.

I went back to a local spot I detected twice 10 years ago. It is a wildlife rescue facility now, but years ago it was a bar with a picnic area in front. I spent 5 hours detecting a section of the picnic area. It rained pretty hard toward the end of the hunt so I got pretty wet. I found lots of tabs, and some can slaw but I did manage to find a few goodies. In total 33 coins with a face value of $2.85, a couple of locks, a set of keys and 3 additional keys, a woman’s Seiko watch, a copper band marked X 7, a Canadian nickel, 3 wheaties, 2 silver dimes and a key tag marked X 56.

The silvers were what I was hoping for. As I was swingin low and slow I got a deep sounding high tone. When I popped the plug I pinpointed the 1956 Rosie and put it in my finds box. I pinpointed the hole and got a strong signal. I scooped more dirt out of the hole and out came the 1945 Mercury dime. The 3 wheaties I found are a 1945, 1949 and 1953D. These are my first 2 silvers of my new detecting year. A good end to the first week of my new year.

My last 3 hunts at the scout camp have yielded, 274 coins, 286 coins and 283 coins. So piles of clad, a CW bullet, 2 silvers and more interesting finds from the scout camp made a good week of detecting. I’m enjoying the cool (sometimes cold, in the 30s) spring fresh air exercise. Thanks for looking, stay safe and keep swingin.

Nica hauls! Scout camps are always a blast to dig.

Young scouts do have a tendency to loose things in the woods. You can find almost anything. Thanks for your reply, stay safe and keep swingin.
