My wife and I walk every evening. When the weather is bad she prefers to walk at the mall to avoid the cold, wind, rain and snow. Sometimes I get luck and find a penny or 2, but not a lot lately (most people using credit and debit cards and not cash). But the other day I got lucky and found a penny, a dime and a folded up $20 bill under a chair in the food court. My best cash find was a bank envelope with 5 twenties in it a long time ago, but this is definitely the best eyeball find in a good while.
I went back to the festival grounds for 5 hours of walking and swingin exercise and brought home the clad, but not much else. All together 68 coins with a face value of $3.69, an modern aluminum pony shoe, tabs and aluminum cans and slaw. Ok clad wise but rather disappointing considering some of the stuff I have found there in the past.
The ground at home is finally thawed so I went back to the new permission where I found the Indian, buffalo and a small field of wheat. I wasn’t sure there was much left, but I continued my grid in the front yard and did the side yard. My first target was a tab and my second was an Indian head penny. Shortly after that I found the first V nickel I have found in a good while. It turned out to be my best day in a long time. Not a lot of value, but interesting find after interesting find with a nice pile of wheat. There was of course the usual pile of trash and in the top part of the trash/recyclable box you can see an old stone masons chisel that should clean up nicely.
19 wheat pennies, 1909, 1909, 1910, 1911, 1917, 1918, 1919, 1919, 1919, 1924, 1936, 1938, 1940, 1946, 1949, 1950D, 1952, 1956D, 1956D, a 1901 Indian head, 2 1907 V nickels, a 1943 P silver war nickel and a 1960 French 1 franc (made of nickel). I think the early wheats will clean up very nicely, they don’t have much wear on them.
2 lead soldiers in what looks like German WW 1 uniforms, 2 equipment tags (11, 13) and 5 coal mine chits (2 have been recycled with a different number on the back marked out with 0’s)
A Rogers plated teaspoon, 2 toy vehicles, a brass plate (not sure what it is from), a plated sash buckle, a STAR padlock body, a beat up toy wrist watch, a packet watch with part of the fob chain attached, an aluminum souvenir coin from the DECATUR STREET IRISH CLUB, a ring, a tiny harmonica (smallest harmonica reed I have ever found, I had one of these as a kid in the 50s ), a modern sport coat button, a small black smith type soldering iron end, 2 small lock keys and a skeleton key. The ring was in bad shape on the outside, but when I pushed the dirt out I could see the gold on the inside. It has a hallmark and 1/30 14K GOLD SHELL on the inside. Not much gold, but at least I found some. So this hunt has a little silver and gold and a bunch of old. A good day indeed.

The scout camp is to the north and west of us higher in the mountains so it gets a little more snow and it is a little colder, but it finally thawed so after 3 months I was able to go back and do a little swingin. The finds are fewer, but we always hope for the best and sometimes we get it and sometime we don’t. This trip was not great with a lot of dead space with nothing to dig, but I did get a couple of nice surprises. (A horseshoe and a half from the old farm, a masonry hammer and a $10 bill on the surface)
In 6 hours with the CZ21 I managed 90 coins and 1 bill with a face value of $16.53, 53 camp tent pegs, horseshoes, 4 rope tensioners, a Webelos slide, a Chucky Cheese token, a game spinner, a few tabs and lots of melted aluminum from the fire pits.
So the old guy is still out there swingin and having a lot of fun finding all kinds of stuff. 2 nice paper money finds (I will count the $10 as metal detecting money because I found it while detecting. I do not count the $20 because I was just out for a walk.) Looking like a good year for me, not my best but a long way from my worst.
