Was out for a couple hours today and thought I would share my keepers with everyone. The heart cutout heel plate would be my best of the day. Lots of theories on what the heel plates were for, from civil war to ladies of the night. Coincidence or not , the owner of this property was a Mrs. Mast in 1870. Any input on the “Made in America “ small copper piece with the square cutout would be appreciated, Button? Cuff link piece?

Nice saves. I really like the heal plate. The heel plate should date back to the War of Northern Aggression. Many soldiers wore these, and many have been recovered in campsites, etc. Your heel plate is in great condition. Well Done on some nice saves of History.

The cut-out heel plates are 100% female civilian, and not necessarily from "ladies of the night"... there were plenty of women in camps, from officer's wives to laundresses, nurses, and cooks. Compare the size to the heel of a mans brogan and you will understand. The men did use heel plates, but they were made of steel and horseshoe shaped.

Well done on the heel plate. Seen a lot of miles in it's life.
Here is a good write up from years ago on the plate as yours.
