An artifact?

Several years ago, I found this button-like object about 100 yards inland from the beach at Venice, Florida.? It is not metallic, very hard (I couldn't scratch the raised ridge on the bottom with a knife blade), about as hard a a porcelin plate that I once used for scratch-tests in my college mineralogy class.? I appears to have been soft at one time because on the bottom it appears that something was pressed into it.
Do you think that this is an indian artifact or something more modern?? Thanks for your input.

Hey Joe. I used to see these all the time back in the seventies. They were incorporated in the macrame hangers we all had back in those days. Usually handmade to save on overhead by the hippies that did the weaving. HH~CO2
