Another point to consider is.....It is claimed When the teepee is set up the door hole should be facing East toward the rising sun. All of the following instructions assume that the teepee door will face East. The three tripod poles are referred to as the North Pole, the South Pole, and the Door Pole.

When you look at the teepee which appears to have no doorway its on the other side facing east give or take. Facing the rising sun.

The teepee faced east so it was towards the rising sun and away from the harsh west winds. This made it warmer inside

The smoke flaps could figure too. VS having the predominant wind running directly into them.

We also got to remember the reservation was a loose amalgamation of 3 Indian tribes. The Walla Walla, The Umatilla tribe and the Cayuse tribe.

They all had common cultural attributes but in essence spoke different languages. Generally speaking even tho grouped together on the reservation they tended to stick around their own tribal groups.

As you can see the largest group the Umatilla tribe camped near Mission and Indian agency below in 1903.

The Cayuse tribe camped at a place called Thorn hollow near the Umatilla river 9 miles east of Mission. here is too pictures showing back then in 1900.

Here is picture of the same site in 2011 below.

From the 1900 picture you can see where Cayuse Indians had pitched their teepees?
