The smoke flaps could figure too. VS having the predominant wind running directly into them.

We also got to remember the reservation was a loose amalgamation of 3 Indian tribes. The Walla Walla, The Umatilla tribe and the Cayuse tribe.

They all had common cultural attributes but in essence spoke different languages. Generally speaking even tho grouped together on the reservation they tended to stick around their own tribal groups.

As you can see the largest group the Umatilla tribe camped near Mission and Indian agency below in 1903.

The Cayuse tribe camped at a place called Thorn hollow near the Umatilla river 9 miles east of Mission. here is too pictures showing back then in 1900.
