Hey guys :). Well i had the chance to revisit that building down the street from my job, where i found that british half-penny (discussed here ) for about 2 hours. Only this time, where the concrete had been removed, the workers had dug about 18" deep beyond the concrete slab, and left the dirt right beside the holes. So i collapsed the shaft of my little garrett as short as it would go and began to sweep where the guys had excavated. Being this deep there was alot less iron trash so i set to all-metal. I kept everything cuz it was dark inside the building and i didnt want to risk tossing something good. Apparently there was a fire sometime before the existing building, because i could see a thick layer of ashy soil and burnt wood in the walls of the dug area. anyway, heres what i came up with. i didnt take pics of the trash i came home with but went through it carefully before discarding.

the gold disc at the top in the first pic is the back of a pocketwatch i'm sure, but i dont think its real gold. one speck had flaked off leaving an orange metal beneath it, copper i suppose. the ring at bottom left isnt a finger ring i dont think, but i'm gonna clean it to be sure. I'm gonna try to get some of the corrosion off all this stuff and i'll post a pic of results. I'm also goin back to this site tonight, keep your fingers crossed!

Heres the barber dime when i finished cleaning it. The galvanic method i used took a bit more of the surface than i'd hoped. But all in all i'm pleased considering what i started with.

Ok, i think i see a reef on the obverse side (right pic). Since i cannnot see the front, then it can only be one of these dimes (ssuming the size of the coin is exactly like a dime, if not, it could be a 3 cent piece, or several other coins)

First there is Drapped bust dime, made in the colonial erra

Then a seated liberty dime, made in late 1800's

last a barber dime, made at the turn of the century

If any more details show up during cleaning, just PM me (i usually don't check back on my post) and i will try my best to ID it

cool find bud its either a later era seated dime or Barber dime here it is blown up, inverted colored and rotated you can clearly see "ONE DIME" and the kind of back of those later coins also it looks like it may be an "S" mint mark although I cant be positive about that!! if it nis I hope its a 1903 :) !! congrats I cant wait to see her cleaned up!! hh jd

Actually it didnt come out as nicely as i expected. Based on the visible surface of the coin, before cleaning, i thought it would come out smoother. I cleaned it in a solution of one Tbsp of sodium carbonate in hot water. I loosely folded heavy duty aluminum foil around the coin and submerged it in the solution for about one hour, i then checked it, then put it back in using fresh solution and foil. After about another 30 min i got the results you see here. I welcome any feedback from ppl who have used this method, just PM me. I dont have a magnefiying glass(gonna get one), but looking closely there seems to be a "flaking" of the surface that was covered in corrosion.

Please take your time cleaning it!! she's in great shape undeneath that junk... it does look like its a 1905-S but it may be a 1903-S and if it is thats hundreds of dollars even in that shape, real cool find I have never found a silver coin that corroded before so I dont have any advice on how to clean that one... hopefully someone here does!!! hh jd
