Great horn owls around here seem to perch and hoot in a dead cottonwood more than trees full of leaves in the warmer months. I was thinking maybe they understand the acoustics of sound and know they can be heard better in a tree with no leaves??. Of course after fall when the leaves are all gone in my cottonwood I wake up around 4am with a hooting owl some mornings. My dog gets all concerned and the cat get nervous with a hooter around.
