Apologies again if this isn’t a true what is it, I was looking for another find in my pictures when I found this. It appears to be a fired round ball with a fabric impression… I feel like I’ve been a part of a similar conversation on this site but I can’t recall how it was settled. If it was from the patch… or maybe it hit some cloth on a hard surface? Or I had a new thought could I be confusing A fired ball for a bale seal? Would those have a fabric imprint? Anyway I only have the one picture without doing some digging for the item but any insight is appreciated.

Looking at the picture and thinking a bit I think it’s on the Opposite side from the impact so I’d rule out post firing causes.

Here's some spent patches from a muzzle loader.
Weave of fabric would determine imprint.
And material varied.
A good linen is nice. But simple cotton more common.

A real tight patch/ball combo could get imprinted just by loading it.

I myself have a .50 cal flintlock rifle. My first few times firing it, I noticed I had to force the ball with a ball starter and then use my ramrod. I had to use a ball puller because stupid me, I forgot to put powder in the barrel . When I pulled out the ball, it had fabric marks like this on it. I believe releventchair is correct.
