Dinx...

In addiction to what Wiki said in the above response...
Please take a few more pictures... and...
Include something in the pictures that can be used as a size reference... IE: Quarter... Dime... or other....
IF larger in size use something like a soda can.
Also...
General location where the item was found and any info on known history of the location would be helpful...IE: Beach... Woods... old house... etc.

Need more info and additional pics. But if I HAD to guess, I would say it is an artillery shell fragment.

I figured the groove in the item and the rust crusted all over it were clues - you are all pretty smart around here so I assumed you would rip it into the piece it once and slap the name upon it- before I could give any thought to it.

I appriciate the honest stabs at this - I am in Dallas , Georgia - and it was in my yard - it is iron , and here is another pic for size reference . If your all not bored yet. Your guess is much better than mine . I'm basically brain dead - and frankly I seriously am nothing but a bloody idiot compared to most of you in this "net". Fragment of some sort is my guess- so that's why I came to you . To let the professionals give their opinions . I thought my kids would find it interesting if it was a piece from a cannon - or wtf ever. Call me silly, A fool, a silly fool- but I'm not a liar.
Everyone likes a little ass- no one likes a smart ass.
